Chapter Nine

Thatcher

My heart hadn't stopped racing since Grant Smith's scent accosted me a second before the man himself. I'd wanted to grab Dylan, tuck him under my arm and run into the horizon. But Dylan hadn't been able to even look at me once he saw his father was there.

He'd kept his gaze turned firmly away and though I pleaded for him to just turn his head in my direction for even a second to let me know how he was feeling, he wouldn't. He'd sent me away with a polite thanks before shutting the door in my face.

What had I expected? For Dylan to turn on his father? Truly, I didn't want that to happen. Grant was hard-nosed, gruff, demanding, and stubborn, but he'd been my best friend for over a decade before we'd split apart. And while he was gruff and demanding, he was also loyal. He'd been loyal.

Now, he'd likely convinced Dylan to have nothing to do with me. I couldn't think of any other reason to explain why Dylan hadn't replied to a single text after sending that classic, we have to talk message. My heart had dropped into my gut and had stayed there for the rest of the day.

Somehow, I'd managed to finish teaching my afternoon classes. After, I'd waited by the car for an amount of time that was embarrassing for me to recall now, considering I'd ended up putting on a bright face and driving home alone. Elijah had been curious about Dylan, but I'd told him the truth, sparing him the inappropriate details.

Our evening together had been as normal as it could have been. After dinner, he'd even spent some time in the living room with me, watching a quiz game show before I finally sent him up to bed. Earlier, I'd contacted a child care service, booking someone for that evening.

The sitter, a kind eyed elderly woman, told me to take my time. Apparently, she was a natural night owl—the metaphorical kind only—and loved this job because she was able to do what she cherished, when she was naturally awake.

I didn't know what to expect, but I knew I couldn't wait for the morning to face it.

I drove to the dorms, feeling like an insane person as I parked in the lot. I could spot Dylan's room; the light was on. Because he'd forgotten it when he fell asleep? Because he was awake pacing trying to figure out how to end things with me? My jaguar snarled. He wanted me to do whatever it took to keep Dylan in my life. Except, I couldn't force the young man to be with me. I didn't want to.

I took the chance that he was up, it was only ten after all, and called him.

He answered on the first ring. "Hello?"

On the drive over, I'd thought of a thousand different things to say. I was a lawyer, used to convincing even the most unyielding of juries to see things from my perspective. But, I didn't know what Grant had said about me, or even what Grant knew at this point.
